"Children gain confidence as they learn ways to manage stress and feel good about themselves."
Stress in teens is now being recognized as one of the most un talked about but frightening health issues today. Just like children, teens are faced with tremendous pressures, challenges and emotions. Unfortunately, if kids have not learned stress management tools as children, it can have detrimental consequences as they grow older.
Teens, as a generalization don't know "how" to communicate effectively. Although, they do want and need our support. Kids are working on their independence and trying to figure out who they are - and what they want in life.
The Teenage Brain - Not developed till age 21
Research has shown that the teenage brain is not fully developed until around the age of 21.
The teenage brain:
Cannot "perceive" emotions or events accurately. This is a very important concept. A child - teens "beliefs" about themselves, situations or others may not always be accurate.
Is not capable of making sound decisions or judgments. This is an important fact to realize. Our kids are thrown in situations where they need to make the right choices. Obviously, incorrect decisions can be not only be dangerous, but life threatening.
Is spontaneous. It is not ready to think: Cause - Effect
It is important to realize,
teens are not yet capable of handling
the stressors, emotions and choices
that they are dealt.
" It is like turning on the engine of a car without a skilled driver at the wheel".
Many teens are struggling and suffering alone. Many are choosing harmful, destructive ways of coping. Adults often are naive to what teens are doing to cope. Many of these negative coping skills are foreign to them. It is the responsibility of parents, teachers, coaches to understand what is out there. This generation needs us.
